Mandate for Peace Tour Begins!
Regretfully, I have to top off with diesel – biodiesel doesn’t run under 40 degrees and it is freezing and getting colder where I’m going!
At the gas station, several women come up to speak with me. I am struck once again with the intensity with which these women talk about ridding ourselves of the bush regime and the need to end this fuckin’ war. I invite everyone to seriously consider coming to D.C. I hope they come.
Faithful to my tradition, I pull out of the crisp, sunny bay area listening to KPFA for as long as I can. I’m listening to a report back from the media conference in Tennessee first and then to quotes from Martin Luther King.
I have totally spaced that tomorrow is Dr. King’s birthday and the actions I was planning for in front of Congresspeoples’ Offices in Phoenix and Tucson = the Peace-In – aren’t going to happen.
I decide there are too many reactions from drivers passing the truck to count until I am really on the road: i.e. out of California. As I drive down 5, I’m still dismayed by the ugly pale haze that seems ever-present from Oakland to L.A. It’s as natural a part of the scenery as paint on a canvas.
Folks react very positively to the message – some hanging out their windows or poking thru sunroofs. I do get one fuck you from an angry white man, late 30’s, driving that new mega-monster pickup truck!
My drive to L.A. is uneventful. I pick up some things at the CodePINK house in L.A. Lovely Liz makes a delicious vegan meal for us, I work for a couple of hours putting out alerts and answering email and then I’m back on the road again.
