....because we can!
When I returned home this evening, a womon called to tell me she had seen us on the news & was so happy that we did something today, International Peace Day. But she was also very perturbed seeing less than 100 activists came out to this beautiful protest and was asking where the hell were people?
I ask her whether she was one of the protesters this morning, to which she answers “no”. I ask her why she didn’t make it and she tells me she was busy –she’s new to the Bay Area and is trying to find housing.
“Well,” I tell her, “you’ve answered your own question.” She’s confused. She could not be expected to come this morning; she has a valid reason for staying away.
I tell her everyone who didn’t come this morning had the same reason as she did – there was something they deemed more important than coming to work to end war.
And everyone who came, also had the same reason for not coming – but they chose to work later, find housing later, participate now.
When people tell me they have to work, I tell them so do I. When people tell me they have to go to school, I tell them so do children in Iraq. When people tell me they have to stay home, I tell them so do women in Iraq. When people tell me they have a doctor’s appointment, I tell them so do I.
I continue to give her my “we are so (fuckin’) privileged in this country, we can choose to continue our lives as usual while we’re bombing the hell outta other women, children, and men.”
And THAT is why less than 100 people showed up this morning – because we are privileged and we are taking advantage of our privileges.
