Day 2 in Brownsville...

I spent my morning talking with a young womon who shared some of the racism she, her family, her community faces here on the borderland: for example, being forced to first of all, leave their country, family, community behind and secondly to work in the fields as migrant workers. And we talked about feminism and how much she wants to plug into feminist empowerment but feels 'hampered' by the racism white womyn bring to feminism - which is really heart-breaking for many reasons but especially as it was/has been Black and brown womyn who have brought the framework, analysis, and empowerment of feminism to our consciousness, to our life. Young womyn need to know this, including white womyn.

I have been unable thus far to connect with people doing the work at the border - Team Brownsville said they have plenty volunteers this week but furthermore they want a month's heads-up for volunteers. I'm waiting to hear from Yalui Village, hopefully today!

So for now, I've been focusing on the rest of my book tour from El Paso to Las Cruces to Bisbee to Tucson to Phoenix to Las Vegas! I do have two cafes here in Brownsville & Harlingen that might host me in the next few days, but I'm also going to focus on setting things up for January or February.

And for the third time during these past almost 20 years I had to spend the night last night in a fuckin walmart parking lot. It was that or drive 40 miles to a truck stop or 70 miles to a rest stop....grrrrr. But it actually was great (for a parking lot), quiet, lots of room, and no one harassed me - hopefully they noticed my missives though! The best thing of course is access to a clean bathroom 24 hours a day!
