I’m trying to get this diesel mechanic
to listen to me. He’s already told me he doesn’t know anything about running
veggie oil but he’s been a diesel mechanic for 30 plus years. I take time to explain to him the principles of veggie oil. He - and all the guys in the shop - listen intently.
He’s very
defensive when I try to get him to first flush the diesel/veg oil out of the lines, tank, filter before he assumes my injection pump is the problem. I
lay my hand on his arm and tell him I am not doubting his expertise but please
do as I fuckin ask – not.
Instead I ask him to talk with my mechanic
on the east coast, which he agrees to – they do a little male diesel bonding and I’m resigned to
leafin my truck if I’m to make it to my readings, let alone to witness at the
border and stand with Yalui Village.
He’s insisting my injection pump is
burnt out – which means it has to be removed, sent to someone in El Paso to
build it, reinstalled – which is a two week job give or take a few days.
I’m bummed but I find out I can rent a
car for about $175/week so I decide I need to do that in order to do the
readings I worked so hard to get: one in Harlingen on the 9th,
Brownsville on the 12th, and Austin on the 18th.
So I’m loading a rental car with my
camping gear, food, clothes, cooking stuff, books and off to Texas I go.
