George the father
Desiree is dressed to go inside the rows of chairs, looking for her goddess-daughter, who is graduating. She is of course dressed in pink, with a fancy pink shopping bag filled with tissue paper cushioning a couple of banners, and a hot pink umbrella. It is muggy & rain is threatening, as usual.
The rest of the CodePINKers are marching down Pennsylvania Ave to the Mall where the chairs are set up - the puppet George in his black & white striped prison outfit is accompanying the hot pink procession down the street & toward the ceremony.
Hundreds of thousands of people see the banner "Troops Home NOW" and "Women Say ENOUGH!" Our plan is to try to get as many students as possible to wear the number of U.S. soldiers dead printed on hot pink tape and stuck to their gowns. We cannot get too close to the students but some people take the number & stick it over their hearts.
Desiree is inside the rows of chairs. She opens her hot pink umbrella that says "peace" and "women say no to war" in English & Spanish. She positions herself in front of the row of cameras, peering up and down as if desperately searching for her goddess-daughter's family. Soon the secret police direct her to the side of the chairs where the trees are at. She obliges and moves toward the rest of the codepinkers.
As she walks out, she sees two students stand up on their chairs, turning their back to Bush. They have painted peace symbols on their graduation caps. She returns into the rows of seats, opening her umbrella again & tells these young people how brave they are, how they are doing the right thing, and how they should never give up.
