On the screen: White Tears, Brown Scars - What Will White Womyn Do To End Racism?" Wednesday zoom gathering
As white feminists, we bring racism into everything we do. Ruby Hamad writes how white feminism betrays women of color, as does Audre Lorde in “Sister Outsider”
How do we hear Black and brown womyn when confronting our racism? How do we identify and remove the barriers of racism proactively?
We examine the ways in which we still carry within us this weapon called racism, knowing that racism is carefully taught not just in schools, religious institutions, but within our very own families, neighborhoods, communities.
Starting again examining the beginning: what has been our family of origin folk lore passing on racism, white supremacy and privilege – whether blatant, intentional or not? What was our first relationship with a person of color and how/what parts of that relationship was formed through racism. What if anything remains in our dna of that "beginning".
What is the racism we are now immersed in? What are our plans for smashing the racism that surrounds us present day?
What behaviors do we need to embark on, personally and systemically, to combat racism that we carry into personal relationships, into feminist organizations or on-line groups/social media and that we benefit from institutionally?
