Fuckin "self-identified" white people = are you fuckin kiddin me???

So these days due to covid most of my 'interactions'.... opportunities/challenges/tsuris ..... pop up online when especially white people say the most racist, misogynist, unthinking things they can come up with.

I record them here not just to model ways to confront ignorance, but also if folks have any other ideas to confront ignorance maybe more effectively.

This is the 'interaction' I most recently had with 'JD' = she is in blue

JD: A day for self-identified white people to investigate how money plays a role in whiteness and explore ways to dismantle racial capitalism.

Me: What the fuck is "self-identified" white people? Do u mean I can "self-identify" as any skin color I want, including white? Who the hell would "self-identify" as white then?

JD Interesting question. Since whiteness is a social construct, there is no agreed upon definition of who is white and it has changed over time. And I do think there are societal implications for taking on an identity something that one does not represent.  I use the term to reflect the process of self reflection and the importance of learning about ones cultural history and examining the heritage of whiteness and not avoiding the impact.

Me:   Oh puleeze - what is the social "construct" is racism. The only thing that has "changed" over time is the ability for each new white immigrant group to assimilate into "whiteness" & reap the 'rewards'. 

Everyfuckinbody in the u.s ofa. & around the world knows exactly what "white" is & means - as what & who are Black & brown people. This is reality 101. 

White people may want to deny they are white & ESP deny they have white skin privilege but living under racist, misogynist patriarchy, light skin privilege exists regardless of "self-identify " - as do the dark skinned people who are the targets of racism. I think it is perpetuating racism to proffer the notion of "self-identity" for white people when biology determines physical characteristics as skin, hair, eye color that then are loaded with the "social construct" basis of rewards or punishments. If we want to talk about what white people have "given up" in our rush to embrace white superiority, I understand. But white is ALWAYS a real part of white people's "identity".
